Differentiation: Step-by-Step

Forget about staying up until 3am to meet the needs of different levels of learners.

You want to meet the needs of all your students, yet you have limited time.

Your administrators expect it.
The parents demand it.
Your students need it.
You want to provide it.

You also want to sleep and do laundry and maybe see your family sometimes.

Hi, I’m Lisa Van Gemert, and I help teachers just like you create the classrooms of their dreams.

I love teaching so much. I’ve loved it for as long as I can remember. I used to make the kids I babysat play school. True story.

I remember asking for a date stamp for a present when I was about ten so I could turn my bedroom bookshelves into a classroom library.

I had a crush on my fourth grade teacher, Mr. Brubaker at Cardiff Elementary. It wasn’t the normal kind of crush – I was crushing on his teaching style. I wanted to be that kind of teacher.

And then I started teaching actual students in a real classroom. Ruh-roh.

All of sudden my visions of perfectly behaved students who rushed to school every day just to soak up all the learning I had planned for them evaporated.

I didn’t realize that I’d have kids in my class who were so different from each other that it was like teaching in a one-room schoolhouse.

Worse, I lacked the skill to fix it.

I attended hundreds of hours of professional development, but people just told me what I should be doing. They never helped me do it.

I had two choices: abandon my dream of being Mrs. Brubaker, or get some skills.

I started reading and watching. I gave myself the education I wish I’d had in college

I practiced what I was learning on my students. Over time, I got better.

I learned skills, practiced them, and then refined them.

I rejected anything that didn’t work. Then, I rejected anything that didn’t work easily and quickly.

I reached for the things that made the most difference, the things that truly moved the needle.

Along the way, I developed a love of sharing what I was learning with other teachers just like you. School would end, and I would do two-hour after school sessions for my colleagues.

Now, you can have the benefit of decades of learning, practicing, and growing in just a few hours. You can become an expert in differentiation in a way you never thought possible.
